The Inn at Bay Harbor Wins Gold Medal
Joins Exclusive List of Golf Properties
The Inn at Bay Harbor - A Renaissance Golf Resort has earned the Gold Medal in GOLF Magazine’s prestigious 2010 Premier Resorts awards. The Inn stands alone among the state’s resorts as the only Michigan property ever to achieve Gold Medal status. This is the 11th edition of the Premier Resorts awards, which began in 1988 and is considered the oldest and most authoritative rating of the game’s finest resort properties.
The Inn at Bay Harbor A Renaissance Golf Resort, and its companion 27-hole Bay Harbor Golf Club, joins the illustrious company of five Ritz-Carlton resort properties ranging from Hawaii’s Ritz-Carlton Kapalua resort on Maui, to Jamaica’s Ritz-Carlton Golf & Spa Resort at Rose Hall. Also on the 2010 list of Gold Medal winners are such famed properties as The Boulders Resort & Golden Door Spa in Carefree, Az.; The Homestead in Hot Springs, Va.; The Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North; and Casa de Campo, home of Pete Dye’s legendary Teeth of The Dog course at La Romana in the Dominican Republic. Nearly one half of the 25 Gold Medal recipients are Ritz-Carlton or Four Seasons Resorts properties.
Stephen Kircher, president of Boyne Resorts’ eastern operations, said the award represents a milestone achievement for the resort, the organization and for the state of Michigan.
"This is the first Gold Medal awarded to a Michigan property in the 22-year history of the rankings; what an amazing achievement that is," Kircher said. "We set out for the Gold when we built The Inn at Bay Harbor and Bay Harbor Golf Club and have been working towards this award each year since. Our properties have been proud recipients of numerous Silver Medal awards from GOLF Magazine but the goal for The Inn and Bay Harbor Golf Club was the Gold Medal."
The Inn at Bay Harbor was voted into this elite group by 8,000 readers of GOLF Magazine. Under guidelines established by the magazine, voters judged the properties on four criteria: golf, lodging, food and drink, and service. The quality of golf accounted for 40 percent with 20 percent allocated to the other categories.
For the voters, the stunning world-class ambiance of the Victorian-themed inn with its distinctive red roof and cupolas on the shore of Lake Michigan, coupled with the award-winning 27-hole Bay Harbor Golf Club was a winning combination. The golf course, designed by Arthur Hills, has often been referred to as the Pebble Beach of the Midwest and one of the country’s most diverse collections of golf holes. The Links’ nine play high above Little Traverse Bay along 150 foot bluffs and feature ocean-like views. The Quarry nine is cut through an immense shale quarry with rugged rock walls and sand dunes, while The Preserve is nine holes of northern Michigan wooded solitude.
Kircher said to achieve such status is even more gratifying considering the competition from resorts in warm weather, expensive tourist magnets in Hawaii, California, Arizona, Florida, and the Caribbean.
"It’s testimony to the hard work by our team at The Inn at Bay Harbor to have world-class service and world-class facilities," Kircher said. "We hope that with this recognition, more people from around the country and the globe will think of Michigan and Bay Harbor as a premier resort golf destination."
